SC State Earns FCS Coaches Preseason Ranking ,Bulldogs No. 16; Gambling 25



Football Update

SPARTANBURG, SC – South Carolina State, the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion and the league’s 2009 preseason pick is ranked 16th in the FCS Coaches preseason poll released Monday. Coach Buddy Pough’s team finished 13th in the final rankings of the 2008 poll.
Appalachian State, who defeated the Bulldogs in the first round of the FCS playoffs last season, is the number one pick for the third consecutive year, according to the release.
Grambling, last year’s SWAC Champion and the team SC State faces in the Sept. 6 MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, is 25th in the poll.
The Bulldogs and Tigers are the only HBCUs in the rankings, although several others received votes, including six other MEAC schools -- Hampton, Florida A&M, Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman, Morgan State and North Carolina A&T.
Other HBCUs receiving votes were Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Prairie View, Jackson State, Southern and Alabama A&M of the SWAC.
