SC State Holds "Meet the Players Day" and Fan Fest
Bulldogs Conduct Second Scrimmage

Football Update
ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State conducted its second preseason scrimmage Saturday morning and followed in the afternoon with “Meet the Players Day” and Fan Fest at O.C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium. And, to highlight the day, members of the 2008 MEAC Championship team were presented their championship rings.
Following the scrimmage, which lasted approximately two hours, Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough noted that his team’s performance, especially on offense, was much better than a week ago during the team’s first preseason scrimmage.
“We have a lot of work to do,” said Pough, whose team opens its 2009 campaign in two weeks against Grambling in the fifth MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando. “But I thought we were considerably better than we were a week ago. I thought we made a lot of strides on offense and our ones (first team) on both sides of the ball played well.”
During the scrimmage, which included 91 plays on offense and 32 on special teams, the Bulldog first-team offense was matched against the second-team defense and the second-team offense went against the first-team defense.
Saturday’s scrimmage was the final full-fledge scrimmage for the Bulldogs, who will now begin preparing for their Sept. 6 encounter with Grambling, who edged the Bulldogs for the 2008 SBN National Black Championship and is ranked ahead of SC State in both HBCU 2009 preseason polls.
The Bulldogs will return to the field Sunday, at 5 p.m., and then take Monday off as they begin their in-season routine. There is one change, however. Pough said his team would workout Tuesday morning instead of in the afternoon so that his players can participate in the second annual “Pep Rally on the Square,” sponsored by the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association (DORA). The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and the public is invited. Area high school teams will also participate.
