N.C. A&T loss, huge win by SCSU creates shift in polls

Boxtorow.com After week seven of the college football season, there was some movement in the Boxtorow coaches’ and media polls. In the coaches’ poll, the four highest teams held their positions, although South Carolina State is within 12 points of Tennessee State, compared to a 30-point separation in last week’s poll. SCSU was impressive in a road win, beating North Carolina Central 44-3 in a nationally televised game on Thursday evening. Bethune-Cookman easily held its first place ranking receiving 16 of 17 first-place votes. Tennessee State was equally impressive in a 31-15 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Jacksonville State and received the other first-place vote. No. 4 Jackson State was challenged by Mississippi Valley State but ultimately defeated the Delta Devils 26-17 on the road. North Carolina A&T’s loss to previously unbeaten Hampton 31-26 in Hampton, VA dropped the Aggies from No. 5 to No. 9 this week. It was the second loss in a row for N.C. A&T. Conversely, Alcorn State’s 48-0 victory over Grambling in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis enabled the Braves to move up from No. 9 to No. 6. Southern and Alabama State both won and both moved up this week. Meanwhile in the media poll, the top three – Bethune-Cookman, Tennessee State and Winston-Salem State – remained the same. South Carolina State moved up one spot to the No. 4 spot, while Jackson State lost one spot and is No. 5 this week. N.C. A&T’s loss created room for Alcorn State who reentered the poll at No. 8, also allowed Alabama State to move up to No. 6 from No. 5 last week, and Tuskegee to gain two places moving to No. 7. The Aggies dropped three spots to No. 9, while NCCU dropped out of the poll. The Boxtorow HBCU FCS coaches’ and media polls are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW.
